Description
Faubourg Marigny
The Faubourg Marigny is a triangular shaped area comprised of a
variety of one-story houses in the styles of Late Georgian, Creole,
and Greek Revival, the Creole cottage and shotgun cottage being
predominant. The area definitely has a strong 19th century flavor.
Houses in this area are usually built flush with the front property
line leaving small front yards adorned with ornamental cast-iron
fences. There are several two and three story structures, most of
which line Esplanade Avenue. The large warehouse at Decatur and
Marigny may soon be converted into apartments and commercial space.
The area has become an extension of the French Quarter with cafés,
restaurants, musical venues, as well as a lively club scene. There
are also small businesses, light industry, some large businesses,
home businesses and Bed and Breakfasts.
It is a very diverse area that feels like a community with artists,
craftspeople, musicians, retirees, young and old, singles and couples,
gay and straight.
Bywater
Bywater, similar to Marigny, is a riverside neighborhood containing
mostly one-story shotgun 19th century houses packed closely together.
